transfering info from one hard drive to another

A month ago, my PC stopped working. Spme sort of power problem as one day it just wouldnt power up.
I bought a new laptop, but I've got loads of saved files/programmes/favourites and games on my old HD.
Is there any easy way to transfer the info over to my laptop bearing in mind my PC has no power???
I've borrowed someones PC and removed my old HD and connected it up to my friends PC, but it only has a floppy drive and I've got big files to transfer!
I do have an external HD with USB connection, but would rather not put more software on my friends PC if its not necessary.

Thanks for any help

How about a 3.5 inch hard drive to USB caddy such as this or similar.

But why would you be putting more stuff on your friend's PC?
If your hard drive is installed then it is essentially your PC now until your friend's HD is reinstalled. Secondly if you have an external HD then it would not need to add anything to the internal HD. Just plug it in and drag and drop whichever files you need to back up and voila, you're done.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • These are your cheapest option, although you can probably get them cheaper.

Take the hard drive out of your laptop, connect up to your friends PC as an additional hard drive and copy from your old PC drive to laptop drive.
