I've applied to Abbey, RBS, Halifax and Barclays.
Any banks that will give me a student account with a poor credit history?

Most banks won't give out student accounts at this time as its nearing the end of the academic year. Wait until nearer the new academic year and you should be more sucessful.
(I imagine you're running out of money and want an overdraft? A lot of people this happens to at this point, which is why banks don't want to give them out)0 -
Are you already a student or becoming a student in September?
Lokolo is right about student accounts not being as available at this time of year. August is a better time to start looking.0 -
HSBC are always quite popular with students - might be worth a look.
Who do you currently bank with? They're normally your best bet...0 -
You can probably get a cash account somewhere with direct debits, after a while if you manage the account well they will probably offer better options. Credit unions also offer current accounts and low cost loans. This may be helpful if you can't get current accounts due to bad credit.0

Halifax /RBS offer the largest (possible) 0% student overdraft and I've had no trouble getting that out of them.
As for credit history - at the moment, if you've had problems with defaults etc, I doubt you'll get much from anyone. Go for a normal account and don't over spend. Unless you're in your final year, building a relationship with a bank might work in your favour - so long as it's a good relationship! Please note: I am NOT Martin Lewis, just somebody else called Martyn that likes money saving!0 -
Two years ago, someone I know with an appauling credi history got accepted with the cooperative bank for a student account. May be worthtrying with them?0

Agree with Miss Liquorice. Mine is with the Cooperative, and I don't know anyone who has been turned down by them.0

I sometimes wonder if a student account is worth the hassle if you spent up to the hilt on the overdraft and couldn't pay it back. I am nearly finished on my degree and just had a Nationwide Flexaccount for the duration.DRO granted 17/10/20090

well if that overdraft is a necessity to provide money to survive on, i think a lot of students would see it as well worth the hassle!! you also don't have to pay it back on the day of graduation; it gets staggered so that you have three years in total to pay it back, with the interest free amount decreasing each year..... they also come with offers that can be very worthwhile - the student railcard with natwest is one example that is well worth it!:happyhear0
