From the Times: Mortgage Lending hampered by Savers flocking to NS&I

Options
"The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) said that efforts to boost lending, in line with Government demands, had been undermined as savers flock to deposit money with state-owned National Savings and Investments (NS&I) rather than high street banks or building societies."

Can't say i'm surprised, considering NS&I's paltry rates are still better than many (although by no means all) of the high street bank's rates.

[Begin sarcasm]
Yeah, take no prisoners CML... how dare those savers pull their money from risky highstreet banks paying paltry interest rates and put them into NS&I, also paying paltry interest rates.
[End sarcasm]

Why would I give my money to them so they can lend it to someone who will be in negative equity and lose their job next month, then I have to claim it back when the bank goes bust?
