Growing own veg (Advice)

Hi

Every summer my mum grows her own chinese vegetables as we live so far away from china town(it tastes yummier and its so expensive in the shops).

But this year I thought we could try and grow something else as well as we have so much space at the back. I was thinking of growing peppers, cucumbers or tomatoes. But can anyone tell me (and I know it sounds stupid) do I need alot of space for them to spread/sprout up?? And do I need a green house, as we dont have one, and even though their is lots of space its not big enought to fit a green house.

My Dad grows tomatoes, he buys the plants in May and plants them out in his garden, they produce so many tomatoes, you can hardly eat them all. He doesn't have a green house. I am going to try and give it a go myself this year.

Tomatoes are easy, I just shove a couple of plants in a growbag, put plant supports up and away they go. I also grow carrots in pots.
