can HSBC reclaim an adjustment to a credit card account that they made in error over 8 months ago? I had made an online transfer which managed to get lost in HSBC's system due to their use of different sort codes. When it never arrived on my account I enquired and they told me it was their fault and they would adjust my account appropriately. I was nearing the end of a 0% deal period and so was keen to have everything sorted not to incur interest. They still didn't adjust the account so I phoned again and they repeated their assurance. In fact what happened was that they then credited the amount twice, though it was done over the course of a fortnight and it took me a while to realise. When I did, my feeling was that they had shown such incompetence over the whole affair that it wasn't my obligation to inform them of their mistake. Now more than 8 months later they have phoned me wanting to charge the said sum to my card and asking my permission. Is there any clause which says that after a certain lapse of time they have no right to do so?? Grateful for any advice.

No, you have to pay. Legally you have no rights, though kicking up a fuss would help. Since you clearly owe them and know you owe them I'd just pay it.
