Chances are that when you add credit to your gas meter it will deduct a chunk of standing charges if your tarriff allows this. Why havent you used gas in the winter period?

British Gas Keys are orange & blue, SSE have green ones....if you've put money on a SSE key and your meter is set up with a BG tariff you would have got an error.

Did you put enough money in the meter? If the meter has used all it's emergency credit (say £20) and you put less than that in it would take the money but remain off untill more is put in.
