Home and buildings insurance for first time buyers

We are in the process of buying our first home and have been getting quotes for home and contents insurance online, but I am totally baffled! I have used the main comparison sites and the cheapest we can find is between £246.00 and £255.00 a year with Ehome and Only Insurance. But if we get quotes from the big companies, like norwich union, direct line etc we get quotes that go into £1000+ a year. So I am rather baffled as to why there is such a difference, considering I am putting in the same info for all the quotes. Whats the best way to go about this? Can we trust these cheaper quotes from these companies like ehome etc..... Thanks!

Defaqto gives a rating system for insurances. A lower premium will mean that the level of cover wont be as much and also that excesses you have to pay towards a claim will be higher.
