do you mean Service Pack 1 (SP1) ???
have you done the windows updates to Service Pack (SP2) ??

click on the express button (this update will take a little while on Broadband, don't attempt it if you are on dial up )
you may find other updates that you need to do to bring your version of windows up to date (go back to windows update a couple of times to make sure everything is done)
these are quite important to protect your Pc
256mb is the Minimum requirement for Xp but you should have no problems if you only use the laptop for surfing + documents etcEx forum ambassador

there were disks available in most Pcworlds for free
you can order it from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
but it will cost £6 or if a friend has broadband then get them to download
