Car Insurance issue.

Hi,

I have a issue with my car insurance company at the moment of time and wondering if anyone could give me some advise ?

I drive a old Audi Convertible, which just last week developed a crack in the back windscreen (which is plastic). When i called my insurance company (which i have been with for the last 7 years), they advised me that they do not cover the back windscreen on my car, which i was never made a ware of when i took out the policy. They advised me at the time that windscreens are covered.

When i read the policy terms and conditions, it only states that they do not cover the repair of the roof structure for convertibles, but does not stated any details about not covering the back windscreen. At the moment of time the insurance company is advising me that i have to use my no claim discount, just to repair the rip in the plastic of the back windscreen, which will result in me paying out £300 for the excess.

Could anyone please help me or give me advice/guidance on how i can overcome this issue with my insurance company ? Since this seems to be more of an issue of them not clearly stating this to me when purchasing my insurance with them or being clearly written in there terms and conditions.

You advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks

So for 7 years they've been sending policy documents and every year you haven't bothered to read them?

Sounds like they are covered 100% (they've told you by sending the docs - not their fault you never bothered to read them). A convertible has the rear windscreen as part of the roof structure - it's not a seperate part!

Perhaps you should read the whole policy booklet and check that you have cover for other assumed items.............. ;)

    Which Insurer is it?
  • The insurer is Halifax

Audi Dealer have confirmed it is a seperate part and not part of the roof structure. Since they sell the part seperately.

So please only state the correct facts of the car parts of the car and not make assumptions. ;)

So it is covered under the accidental damage section then.

This might sound a little patronising, but it's not covered under the glass section because it isn't glass.

Well, you might have a point there, but does it state that a windscreen has to be of the material type glass ?

Is that what your insurance company has stated, for windscreen replacement ? Beacuse it does not seem to have here.

The policy booklet on their website states (I have added the bold lettering):

    "What is covered

    We will:

    • pay to repair or replace broken or damaged
glass in the windscreen or windows of your
car and any scratching to the bodywork
caused by the broken glass, as long as there
has not been any other loss or damage."

You might have a legitimate complaint if the exclusion was unusual or onerous and not pointed out to you clearly - but this wording is really an industry standard.

7 years for a plastic windscreen sounds like normal wear and tear too.

You can't claim to have your tyres replaced when they wear out, nor to have your car resprayed if the paitwork gets a bit tired.

Sorry - but you seem to be pushing your luck trying to make an insurance claim for this. And in the long term you might end up paying more by losing no claims than the cost of the part?

    R.
Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.
  • The plastic screen cracked in my megane last year and I was told it wasnt covered under windscreen cover. I could claim through normal insurance but my excess was £500 and the cost of a replacment screen was £250 so obviously I didnt go through insurance.

The screens dont last more than a few years and they go clowdly and go hard in the cold weather and split easlily.
