I think some of the above posters have another agenda! I am not famous, notorious, nor a Manchester player! yet have never had less than good food or service in the Yang Sing, and this is recent, current experience.

The New Hong Kong on Faulkner Street is very good and reasonably priced.

Only been to the Yang Sing once and the food (banquet) wasn't my kind of thing.

Hi, I've been working close to China Town in Manchester for over 5 years and am also of Oriental descent so should hopefully know my stuff ;)!

Please, please, please ignore those people who recommend the Yang Sing. It is trading from a reputation which is decades old and is not a true reflection of the shoddy service and high prices which it doles out now.

If you're looking for a good value lunch served in a buffet style, I would visit Pan Asia. It is a really good restaurant situated opposite the entrance to the main car park in China Town. It does a really good quality buffet at £7.95 for adults and and £4.50 for children. Check out the typical menu here http://www.pan-asia.co.uk/buffet.htm

The food is very good as it reverts to a normal a la carte restaurant in the evening and all the food is cooked fresh and has a speedy turnover. We've been going there regularly for years at lunchtimes.

If you are going in the evening, I would recommend either the New Emporer ar the New Hong Kong which offer a good authentic mix of foods.
yes ur correct about Yang Sing....
they do give some customers a different treatment dependant on who u r!!!

I wasn't aware there was a problem with the Pan Asia site. Apologies, I don't want the reputation of a spammer!!
  • I agree with Andy.

I'm of oriental descent too and there's a reason why the chinese don't go to the Yang Sing.....its simply not worth it and we laugh at the muppets who go and still think its great.

Try Pacific which is opposite the main car park. Thats modern, clean and you can have chinese food or Thai buffet.

Great generalisation there! I've been to the Yang Sing many times and seen many chinese people eat there (whatever that means). I don't think it's particularly nice to call people who like this restaurant a muppet, but if I am for liking their food - fine by me, it's gorgeous!

    too many comps..not enough time!

I have quite a few Chinese friends who eat at the Yang Sing, and there have always been plenty more diners of that ethnicity when we have dined there....so I agree, yours is a sweeping genralisation. Clearly, we are all muppets:rolleyes: or perhaps it is too upmarket for some?

I have actually tried the others you reccomend, and whilst the food is good, the overall experience is not in the same league. it depends whether you simply want a decent lunch/dinner, or an evening out which is an overall dining experience.....like comparing Harry Ramsdens to The Ivy imo.

If I was going to go for a high end Chinese meal, I would much rather go to Wings in Lincoln Square as recommended by knowsleyroader than the Yang Sing. If you want true authentic Chinese or Szeuchuan food, go to Red Chilli. They have two sites in town; one in Chinatown and one neasr the universities on Oxford Road. They serve all manner of weird and wonderful stuff and a lot of offal. Definitely not one for the squemish eater.

Word of advice. If you don't see chinese people eating in the restaurant, don't expect it to be true chinese meals. Other restaurants adjust it and westernise the dish in order to accommodate the dread taste buds killed by alcohol.
