Nearly Scammed..need Advice Urgently

Put in a bid for an item, which eventually did not meet the sellers reserve. Expected to hear no more but then got an e-mail from ebay giving me a "second chance offer" and asking me to reply to an email address. At first i was delighted and replyed to this email and got back a response asking for personal details. I looked into it more carefully and discovered that the email was from a different name to the original seller AND he /she was in the USA. All ebay will say is that it is scam and ignore it BUT I think that seller is still active and obviously I want to do something about this but WHAT? Could anyone help me with what I should do I am very new to this ebay lark

I take it from your note that you have already reported this. If so, there's not a lot further you can do, other than use it as a learning experience. Don't get disheartened- the majority of ebay users are honest and reliable, and those that aren't (such as this person) are generally easy to spot.
Just because you used to be you think everybody else is, don't you?

Report the email and forward it to spoof@ebay.co.uk

  • carolannjo,

The very great majority of eBayers are honest.
However ... the rule of thumb I use is to buy via eBay ONLY. NEVER accept the offer of a deal outside of eBay's auctions.or you really don't have a leg to stand on if things go wrong.

Like zeke says ..the cons are usually pretty easy to spot....any doubts and do as hjb123 says...report your suspicions to spoof@ebay.co.uk

if i had known then what i know now
  • also, never log into ebay from a link in an email, always open your browser and go to ebay from there.
  • Thanks all who replied. This was one of the internal emails you get from ebay in your message in box on the ebay website which also came to my separate email address so it looked like the genuine article. Had a quick look today to see if they had suspended the member this was supposed to have come from and to my surprise he/she is still active. Though it may not even have come from him as in the message was another email address to contact. Not sure whether I should contact this person as their name may be being used in this scam. So should I do this or just now ignore it as I have not lost any money

Dont contact the person! I would probably just ignore it in your case then!
