Buying 1998 property - should I do homebuyers survey?

Exactly what it says.

I've have had offer accepted on a 1998 built property - should I do homebuyers survey or just stick to the valuation. What are your experiences?

bump - please can someone assist? I'm not sure if the homebuyers survey is necessary on a house of this age. What have you guys and gals done?
  • Well I would get one on a 2009 property never mind 1998.

i can definatly say yes..i know sumone who is gunna sell there house and it has structural problems,,,,the problems wouldnt be shown up on a valuation,,,so you could inherit someones "secret" problem.....plus bein out of a NHBC guarantee you would have to pay urself through your insurance....

You're about to spend a six figure sum of your (and your lender's) money. Don't take any chances, particularly with something that could be worth less tomorrow.

get the homebuyers survey!! i shopped around and got it for only £250 which is nothing in the grand scheme of things.. 10 takeaways or 1 trip to the cinema with popcorn and drinks (joke!)??. if it comes up with no problems then at the very least it will give you peace of mind that your house isnt falling down around you and aren't inheriting problems that will come back and bite you on the bum when you re-sell and the buyers surveyor finds them!!

plus because it is me who commisioned it i really feel like the surveyor has my interests at heart and isnt answering to the EA, mortgage company etc...
