E-on Meter Reading, am i in trouble?

Options
Hi I know this may seem naughty but when i was giving my meter reading to E-on for the winter bill i deliberately underestimated by 200 units, figuring that as prices come down in March that i would give an accurate reading in June and pay the 200 at a slightly cheaper eletric rate.

Unfortunately E-on came today and i let them in as i'm waiting on a plumber and thought they were it so i had to let them in to do a meter reading, i'm just wondering as i underestimated my bill what will they do now when they find out that it's a higher meter reading than i gave them?

Not condoning your fib, but just say you must have read it wrong! Eyesight and all that - sure it happens! x
  • Thanks  I'm more hoping that they don't think " Hey he used 200 units in a week, now we can estimate his bills at 2400 units per quarter! ", meaning bills of £1000 plus every 3 months?

Lets hope they come and read the meter in June and you allow them in.

If, as it appears, you've used 200 units (worth about £25, or about £2.25 in discount if you get 9% off - was it worth committing fraud for that?) in about a week, you really don't want an estimated bill in June based on that level of consumption do you.

Edit: too late, :o I see you've already considered that scenario

  • Ok i admit i was wrong, it's just every penny counts these days. Anyway i guess i'll just send a couple of accurate meter readings online untill June.

    Hi outherebrothers,

    This is a bit naughty……….

My first thought is that if your meter has just been read then you may be due a bill soon, if this happens the underestimation you carried out earlier will catch up with you before the price decrease at the end of the month, so you might not have even benefitted from this.

It’s worth noting that your supplier will always be able to back date/amend estimated charges this also applies to any customer readings that don’t fit inline, so the reading for that date could be re-calculated if deemed suspicious.

The reading you entered inaccurately may just be looked upon as an error on your part rather than anything illegal.

My advice for the future is of course to provide accurate readings; if you have a history of inaccurate readings it may affect you if you ever raise a dispute.

Hi i always give meter readings online and i've never had an estimated bill before, i just had my bill on the 9th of march and paid it. If they re-calculate would they just charge me from 9th march till today? I've always given accurate readings, it's just this once i thought i might have made a 'mistake'.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

If the bill on the 9th of March was the billed up to the 'incorrect' reading, and they billed again today, yes, you will just be charged from the 9th (incorrect read) to today's reading.

So in effect today's bill will catch up the 'losed' 200 units and you will have to pay for them on this bill. This is why you won't benefit, because the prices are yet to decrease.

Thanks, so in effect if they decide to charge me from the 9th of march, i will just have defferred the 200 units till now? I was worried they might choose to ignore any meter readings i might give in future and send me estimated bills as a preference, thinking they could estimate at 200 units per week as that's what it would seem i used.

As long as i'm not going to be hauled away to penitentiary then i'm relieved and have learned a lesson.
