Council Tax - 10 or 12 months

Morning

Is there any reason why a council wont allow you to pay your council tax over a 12 month period rather than the standard 10 months

Recieved our bill for 2009/10 and I have emailed them asking if it can be spread over 12 months. Will also follow this request up with a phone call but wanted to know if anyone else has had experience

Thanks

Hi JayJay, there is no reason why you cant pay it over 12 months, they should let you, my sister pays for her's over 12months as do some of my friends so I would imagine they will accept your request x

Thanks for the replies! Not sure what to though - 10 months which leaves me 2 months with extra cash or 12 months at a lower rate! Decisions decisions!

I suppose it all depends on how much you 'need' the extra money now.

I've always paid over 10 months - didn't realiase there was any other option till I joined this site! I have just set mine up now to pay over 12 months. For me the extra few pounds disposable income is worth more over the year than waiting for those two months at the end.

I made a move to 12 monthly payments about a year or two ago and it makes enough of a difference when money is tightt hat I've stuck to it.
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

The 10 monthly instalments is in the Council Tax Regulations - However, each individual council has the discretion to allow you to pay over 12 months.

Seems to vary council to council, ours prefer 10 monthly, but when we had arrears allowed us to go to 12 monthly payments for the current year and the arrears.

We are now officially up to date hurrah!!!

  • Meant to post that earlier about 'ambiguities' between councils. I think it really depends on how you pay eg up front, monthly. Not really sure but something complicated like 'new financial year and so on'. I've always been puzzled over why 10 and not 12 as there are 12 months in the year. Think it's one of those things 'us mere mortals are not meant to understand'. :D
Any help, opinions, views I may hold those are my own. Respect them as you would expect the same in return. Offered freely, is gleaned from a lifetime of experiences, knowledge gaining. Passed on to benefit others. I may be direct, ask you questions but those are to help you. Up to you if you choose to take it. I won't judge you either way.
