Pc Start Up - Then Shuts Down Instantly

  • If you go into the BIOS are all the voltages within tolerance?

I had a problem a few months ago where the 5V had dropped too low.
Started off where USB stuff wouldn't connect, until it got to the point where, like yours, the PC would shut down just after it booted up.

Open the case and check that when you switch it on, all the fans - there should be two on the case wall (1 front, 1 rear), and one on the CPU - are working, then switch it off. I recommend you unscrew any fan that is sitting ontop of the CPU, clean the heatsink as I said earlier (on mine the dust trapped in the heatsink fins was quite considerable and the only way to clean it was to remove the fan.

Now with the heat sink clean, and the CPU fan still removed from the CPU heatsink, set aside the fan in a safe position (unplug it if you can from the motherboard but it's not really necessary to do so), switch the computer on but hold the hoover nozzle close to the CPU heatsink, If you like make a cardboard cone to sellotape to the hoover nozzle, to collect air from a wider area (but still confined to only the heatsink) over the CPU heatsink. The computer should stay on - for as long as the hoover nozzle is there. turn off the hoover and the computer might shut down, if it does shutdown, I'd say that is good evidence that it is a cooling issue. If it doesn't shutdown, rebuild the computer and see how it goes, it might be ok.

Most other hardware faults would cause a blue screen so it does still sound like overheating, does you PSU feel hot after use? is there any chance you processor heatsink is loose and not performing correctly?

Did the hoover out actually make it any better (as in it lasts longer before shutting off?

After the hoover out it worked for a couple of days but then kept shutting down again so in desperation I looked in the yellow pages and got a man to come out and look at it. He took it away and brought it back the next day , charging me £60 but the @ key is now on key number 2 for some reason and after working for another 2 days it won`t even start up now. When he fetched it back all data was lost and aol which is where I have my main email is also not present. I haven`t phoned him back yet as I bought a new mains adapter for a fiver which I can live with and I hoped this would do the trick but still not comig on. Every now and then, it would get to the first screen then shut down before you can actually do anything. This would be say one time out of ten goes of starting up on average. Anyone got any more suggestions besides from throwing it in the river dee.

The keyboard settings are because you are on a US not UK language and keyboard layout...this can be changed back in the Regional settings in the Control Panel.

You still haven't been clear if you've had the side off the pc and hoovered out all the dust from INSIDE the case....it's no good just doing the vents from the outside, as this won't unclog the mobo and CPU..this really does need to be done first before anything else...

It sounds like all your bod did was wipe the hdd and reinstall windows for you...avoid like the plague in future

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I second that, he didn't set th regional settings right while he was at it.

What specs are this PC anyway? it be easier/cheaper just to replace it.

I agree, reading what he wrote again, it does sound like he only hoovered the outside of the computer.
    :wall:

If you want to fix this computer, you're going to have to do as we have suggested. Switch it off.... Unscrew the case cover, and remove the cover, there are different cases out there some you can unscrew the side panel (one at a time) and it slides out, if you remove the wrong side you will only see the underneath side of the motherboard, in which case refit the side cover and remove the other side. Other cases, the whole cover will come loose in one piece, you have to undo all the cover screws on this type.

If you don't understand anything...just ask, that's why we are here. Take photos if you want and we'll tell you which screws to undo. Take another photo of the open case and we'll tell you where to hoover.

At last I have got my Pc working again. I eventually took it to Maplin and within half hour they diagnosed that the start button on the tower was faulty as they tested it and it worked fine. They also changed one of the plugs from tower to the filter.

The OP has had his computer fixed as explained in the quote above and shown on this other thread........
