Old laptop help

I hope i can explain myself, please forgive me if it is a bit confused.

I have a very old Dell laptop with XP on it. It was working fine abeit a little slow, but the other day plugged it in to the mains and there is nothing. The power supply is getting to it as the light is on it, also although power light on pc not on, does flicker on when the power button is pushed.
Anyone got any ideas what could be wrong, is it worth getting looked at or is it completely knackered.
I only want it to watch films on in bed, and my daughter was using it up until very recently as her only computer.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Thanks AnnieP

Mmm dodgy on off button maybe, try using without the battery...
  • As intel suggests, try it without the battery, then put it back in and try it again. Failing that, reseat the ram (under a screw flap on the underside), and if it still doesn't work, put some firm pressure all over the keyboard to reseat any chips.

One other thing to try is to unplug the power supply from the mains, sometimes the power supply crashes (best way I can think of to describe the problem)
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Hi there All, thanks for your help but have tried all that and still nothing happening! Didn't quite understand what reseating the chip meant, put undid the panel and gave them a bit of a push, should i have taken them out and put them in again????
    You are all very kind,
    Regards AnnieP
  • yes take them out and put them in again, but don't walk about the carpet with them in your hands, as static electricity can damage them.
