Fed pumps $1.2 trillion in to US economy

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7951493.stm
The US Federal Reserve says it will buy almost $1.2 trillion (£843bn) worth of debt to help boost lending and promote economic recovery.
It said it would start buying long-term government debt and expand purchases of mortgage-related debt.

I don't really know what a trillion is and I certainly can't really comprehend that much money. Aside from that it's a lot and that once you get above tens of billions it's all just 'shed loads'. I expect to open up the BBC website soon and find that the US government has pumped 8.7 gazillion mahillion f*ckloadsayillion in to the economy and the Dow Jones 'jumped' 134 points in response.

Are yu after another thanks for the same old same old? Ok I would have shed envy for a $1.3 trillion dollar shed too Cleaver.

I too find that amount hard to comprehend. What would it even look like, in a tangible form?

Gold up about 6% in 2 hours on the news

$1.2 trillion would buy 40,000 metric tonnes of gold, or a solid cube 12.7 metres in length on all sides.

Well, thats the answer to how much money is enough then! dh deals in preety big numbers (on his screen)

he once gave me a (client names whited out) document and told me to look for all the outgoings over a staggaring amount....so I did, and then I added up all the out goings on each page and got over the staggaring amount...but these didn't count. Its almost undertsandable how some peole get a bit blase with the big numbers when they ar eon a screen like that and the 'not important numbers' are so huge too.

Okay, this is better. If this is $100 million:

    Then this is $1 trillion:

    Blimey, a $million in $100 notes isn't very big:

What is a Trillion ... in my own words...

If Jesus had been given a trillion pounds and there was no interest on it... and if he had spent £1500 a day - EVERY DAY - without fail from then to now (he has to be immortal in my story) ... then right about now he'd have just enough for a Big Mac.

Pastures....some how that makes it seem less.

I mean here's a guy who can perform miracles in feed huge gatherings on a couple of loaves fish and a wine botle that never empties, and yet now he only has enough for a BigMac?
