i was bored so i decided to see how many firefox tabs i could open before it crashed.
i am using the extension tab mix plus to get multi line tabs.
i managed to open 348 tabs all displaying google.co.uk (my home page)
firefox was also using more than 200 mb of my 512mb ram!
this is an intresting fact! :money:

It's not just about tabs, it's about what the tab was doing before as Firefox keeps track of previous pages for quick back/forward navigation.
So a few tabs that have been navigating to different pages will take up more resources than the same number of tabs opened from fresh - especially if the pages you visited previously were big.
Unless you disable it
Can't remember but it might be browser.sessionhistory.max_viewers from about:config that decides how many pages each tab remembers (default is 5)

When i started out i just wanted to see how many tabs i could open, now looking at my results i could give this a thought.
imagen having 348 internet explorer windows open what would happen?
i would imagen the computer would stop responding much before that fill up the ram very quickly
I will not try that now

But what is the max number that you can actually see? On this computer there is a limit to how much they shrink down before it starts adding them invisibly off to the right.0

If you click on a tab and press the right/left arrow then you can cycle through tabs - even the one's you cannot see.0

i can see them all, using the tab mix plus extension when the line fills up it makes a new one. i was on the 9'th line!0 -
Just out of interest I did the same with Opera. Got up to 100 tabs opened to Yahoo.com, and it was only using 33mb of resources. Very good, although Opera is a true MDI application, whereas I believe Firefox isn't (hence eating up more memory)."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0
