Question re closing joint b/s account

I have found an old Yorkshire Building Society passbook which I want to close as we no longer use it and there is only about £30 in there.
It was opened in joint names, myself and my husband.
We don't have a joint bank account or b/s account so can we get the cheque made out to just one of us if the other authorises it in a letter asking to close the account.
If not the only way around it is to go into the nearest Yorkshire B/S to withdraw most of the money but that is 20+ miles away, can't really be bothered for the sake of £30.
