over tile trims

Options
Just had bathroom redone and contractor fitted an over the tile trim to fit between the bath and tiles. They used silicone to join the trim along the bath/tile corner and some silicone along the top of the trim. however, there are gaps appearing and water is strating to seep behind the trim......is this normal?

what is the correct way to fit such trims? as they dont appear to give the best water tight seal?

Remove the old silicone, fill the bath with water, clean and dry the area to be siliconed, apply silicone, run over with special tool or wet finger, leave to cure overnight at least. To be honest tho, I'd get the contractor back. If you mess with it and the leaks damage behind the tiling, he will blame you.

When tiling around a bath, always tile into edge of the bath, ie, with the bath in place. This is because most bath edges are curved and not right-angles. This gives you a very small gap, which a single small bead of silicone with seal. It also looks clean and tidy. Ive always found if you try and fit a bath to an existing tiled wall, you always end up with a large gap which is hard to seal effectively and looks horrible.

Over the tile trims are hideous things and only for basic diyers. As you had the bathroom redone, i dont know why your builder used these. I would get him back to remove them, clean of silicone and do the job properly.

they used over tile trim on our request as they were just going to apply bead of silicone between the bath and tile only! They said that all it needed - which i did not agree with. BTW tiles have not been redone as it was a straight swap of baths.
I really dont want the contractor back in as this job has taken weeks rather than just a week.

So you went against the advice of the plumber and now you have leaks?

no leaks yet but not confident in the finish of the contractors work.
i was not confident in just leaving it with a bead of silicone, especially as they did not remove all the old silicone. before we had a under tile trim but as bath was changed he put in an over tile trim on request.
