Honest opinions needed please

hi all i am after honest opinions on where/what i should do
not worried what the answer is

i sold a push
buyer received yesterday and sent me a message today saying the pushchair is exactly as described except

smells like smoke

i replied saying i am sorry of this problem i am a non smoker and have two little ones myself and i would contact the courier regarding in the meantime would she accept a refund of £20 towards getting it cleaned as being a non smoker can appreciate the smell is discusting

her reply was we have tried to hand wash and soaked in fairy non bio all night and it has not helped
they do not want to get it professionaly cleaned as it says hand wash only and this may damage it and even the chassis smells and that they would like a full refund

advice greatly appreciated

What's her ebay rating like? It sounds unlikely to me that it could absorb that much smoke via a courier company. Since smoking in the workplace (and that includes delivery vans) is now illegal, they shoulsn't be smoking anyway.

She might smell smoke, but I smell a rat.

TBH having reveived a pushchair that stank of smoke we ended up binning it
we just couldnt get the smell out
even after stripping it,machine washing the fabric parts and scrubbing the chasis it still smelled
however theres no way this would happen in transit

    I agree with others.

I don't think your pushchair could become that 'smokey' in transit?

I think they are probably trying it on and have decided they no longer want it.

If they aren't accepting your offer of £20 for a professional clean have they said why?

Did they get a baragin or is it possible they went a bit 'click happy' come auction end and are now regretting their purchase?

I would say no problem return the item for a full refund minus P&P costs (do you have a returns policy stated?).

    hi thanks for your reply

i did think it a bit strange how it would go smoky in 3 days

they have declined the offer as they say it may damage it as it states hand clean only

i was not sure on returns ploicy listed so just looked on the listing and it says

    Return policy

The seller will not accept returns for this item.

i think i will do as you have said offer a refund minus postage, but then what will happen if they open a paypal claim are they likely to win

    many thanks

forgott to add they got it for a fairly good price

How odd! Sounds to me like they are trying to pull a fast one. My advice would be to offer them a refund minus postage upon return of the item, I bet they won't bother returning it!

I think though that OP realises that if this goes to a paypal claim and they lose they will have to refund in full.

    hi there

i am not worried about refunding them for the item as i said i am a non smoker myself and know how nasty the smell can be

i was simply asking if they would win a paypal claim on the grounds of smells like smoke
as in there first message they said the pushchair is exactly as described but smells of smoke

i am already out of pocket on postage through my own fault of not stating postage rate for mainland uk and do not want to spend near on £30 of my own money for something that is not because of me:o

i hope this message dose not come across as funny:o as i did say in my first message honest opinion

i will do as others have said go and send them a message now

    thanks again

Very stange - I guess you would know whether it had been in contact with smoke before shipping and it is unlikely to attract the smell in transit (assume it was in some form of packaging). Personally I wouldn't let a baby anywhere near it if it had been smokey so would not be considering having it cleaned.

Offer the option of them returning for refund of cost and postage paid, but at their expense for return postage - that is the best they would get from a Paypal claim.
