Laptop USB Power Surges

I have an have 5 year old HP laptop. (yes I know it is ancient by most standards. But I can't afford to replace it and it mostly still works
)
Anyway the last few days when I try and plug in a pen drive or a mouse in one of my USB slots it always says a power surge
The message says that to re-set it re-boot the machine. But of course that does not help as the same thing happens.
I have a feeling that the port has had it.
Mind you the way I feel at the moment I could happily throw it out the window :rotfl:
I did a quick google but found nothing really that could help me. As I really don't want to have to keep taking the mouse out to be able to use my pen drive.
Any other ideas
