Sneaky Price Hike by Total

Just checking our Gas bill and noticed that the price per unit has gone up by 0.375 pence, starting at the beginning of October. We have a fixed price contract so I phoned them.
Unbelievably he said they had to put the price up because they couldn't afford the high prices!
I see the contract says this can be done when the cost is above 3.48 pence - something about ESGM and Heren - but prices have come down again lately by around 50% I believe.
Another paragraph states they can "vary" the contract by sending written notification 28 days ahead. He says we should have received a letter. We most certainly didn't!
This is a business contract, but I am wondering how many others are affected - how many actually CHECK the fiddly numbers?
I'd like to tell them that I can't afford THEIR high prices and am amending our contract accordingly!
