When my bill arrived 6 months ago I was bored and decided to read the small print of the pricing booklet that they had sent. In tiny writing at the bottom fo the tarrif page was a note stating that if you earned less than £15000 PA and were claiming tax credits you could move to their essentials tarrif, saving money. I did this and my bills have dropped dramatically
Cost are as follows:
Gas
First 1228 kWh 4.192p per unit
Thereafter 2.314p per unit
Electricity
First 96 kWh 22.543p per unit
thereafter 9.875p per unit
This won't help everyone, but anyone currently with British Gas should certainly look into it. They asked minimal questions and "hey presto" cheaper gas and electric.
I have had N Power and E-On call to try and get me to switch and neither have been able to find this tarrif when I told them what tarrif I was on with BG and they have been unable to match it

They don't seem cheap!
We are on Click 6 for electric,(no discounts); -
Tier 1, first 125 kWh 19.192p per kWh
Tier 2; - 9.520p per kWh
So both your tiers are more expensive!
Gas with Ebico; - ALL @ 3.77p per kWh
Both above are no standing charge and include VAT, does yours include VAT?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Are you sure you can't get cheaper? Have you checked using kwh figures on comparison sites?0

I've just gone onto the USwitch site and the only cheaper Gas and Electricity suppliers for my area are two offers by E-On for Senior Citizens0
-
Forgot to say - The prices for the Essentials tarrif includes and standing charges but not VAT0
-
The gas seems incredibly cheap. Over what period is the 1,228 kWh? BG normally charge 670kWh on tier 1 per quarter.
The Electricity prices are pretty normal.
Somebody posted on here that the Essentials tariff had been withdrawn - perhaps a BG employee can confirm?
In any case the Essentials tariff was apparently not much cheaper than the standard tariff - and the prices quoted above are way below anything that BG have offered for a couple of years.0 -
I work for BG and can confirm that the Essentials Extra tariff ended several months ago after 500,000 people signed up for it. It ends next month anyway and will in all probability be replaced with something else I expect. BG did replace it with something called Essentials Advance which is still available and gave people who qualified for it free loft and cavity wall insulation and also a 50 credit on their bill after the insulation work had been done. But to be honest its been nowehere near as popular as the Extra tariff because that really was a lot cheaper!!! Hope this helps.loobylou2.Proud to be dealing with my debts and aiming to sort out the mess in 2013!!!!:eek:0

So, the Essentials tariff, designed to help the poorer members of society was in effect a 'limited edition first come first served' tariff?Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
I signed up about 6 months ago for the essentials tarrif and no-one has advised me as yet that it is going to stop. In fact when I phoned them last week to review my fortnightly payments they have just adjusted them for the year and reduced my payments. Let's just hope that they have taken the fact that they are apparantly getting rid of the tarrif that I am on into account.
With regard to the first 1228 kWh this is per quarter0 -
I'm signed up for Gas only on the essentials package as the electricity essentials prices were slightly higher than what I was on.
My quarter Oct to Jan was first 1140 kwh at 4.192p then 4452.84 kwh x 2.314p total bill £150.83 plus vat £ 7.54 = £158.37.
Ebico at 3.77p x 5592.84kwh = £210.85 (hopefully!! )
British gas moved the goal posts by changing the tier 1 allowance which confused the call centre there no end..also makes it difficult to compare as well....0
