Is it fair to get a cat?

Hi Vik,
I am sure many rescues would love to hear from someone as sensible as you!
We have 2 indoor cats. Both taken as adult rescues so no idea of back ground, but first one v timid and hated outdoors. Second 1 a Persian who are a bit simple and have little fear to hold them back so are advised secure garden/supervised only.
We have just moved to a garden flat (after 4 and 8 years of ownership) and the Persian tries to befriend next doors dog so IS NOT going outside at all. She lies on our bed and admires the garden, but even with all the doors open may eventually try to get out side after an hour or so! The other cat (our first rescue) thinks she is now the bravest cat EVER as she can manage a trot around the edge of the garden (as long as I am there) before retiring to admire from the back door!
All the other suggestions here hit the nail on the head! Where abouts are you as I may know some rescues.
Good luck and let us know how you all get on.
PS love this description, the cat I like is called TV and matches our first rescue exactly!

My cat is an indoor cat. I live in a flat conversion, first floor, so no cat flap and its a fairly busy road. She knows no different and is very content and happy. I have a covered cat litter house thingy so no smell whatsoever, I am glad I don't have to worry about her coming to any harm. She is my baby.
I hope you find a solution that works for you.A cloudy day is no match for a sunny disposition~ William Arthur Ward ~0 -

Hi,
Thanks for all the replies so far. They have definitely given me lots to consider and think about.
Getting two cats is definitely something that I would like to consider so that they do have company while we are out. We are not renting fortunately so don't have to worry about that side of things, We could put a catflap in our door, but unfortunately the building we are in is listed and we would not be able to put one in the shared entrance, as it is on the front of the building.
I don't think indoor cats are cruel at all, one more thing to consider, IF you put a catflap in your private door, I bet they could get in & out of the shared door pretty easily? Lots of people coming & going or is it a small block?
Get two cats (best to get them together) & then you won't need to feel bad about them being lonely.0 -

I have two cats - one is a rescue tom - he chooses to leave the block to explore/hunt/whatever every now & again - he was a teen-cat when I got him & lived in places with gardens (I imagine); the younger cat I got when she was six weeks old & she chooses to just wander the shared areas in my block. They are both happy & the Tom has befriended some of my neighbours so that if he needs to get back inside when I'm asleep or at work he mostly can, or he hangs around outside until I come home/wake up - it's never been a problem. The female doesn't like the idea of not having complete control of being able to re-enter my flat at will so doesn't bother to leave the building.0
