*Growing up, sex ed books for young girls?*

Can anyone recommend a book about puberty, periods etc, for young girls?

My daughter is 9 (10 this year) and I'd like us to go through a book together.

Any ideas?

I had 'Every girls Life guide' by Miriam Stoppard which was good, though probably aimed at people a bit older. When I was a bit I had one called 'Have you started yet?' (I think) which was just about puberty/periods whereas the first one had stuff on growing up, looking good, sex, coping with death/divorce and so on.

Not sure if it's still in print but I had one called "Growing Up" published by Usborne. Very money saving too, cos my mum was an Usborne rep at the time and got it with vouchers ;)

I do remember it being quite good though.

  • Hi,

I sell Usborne books and they do still do growing up as well as one called whats happening to me for ages 8+ especially for girls.

If you can't find a copy let me know and I can get hold of one for you.

I had that book too! It's The Osbourne Guide to Growing Up. I don't know if it still exists though!

I've got the Usbourne book in the cupboard and an 11 year old daughter who started her periods at 10. I still think that book is too explicit for her. I'm not even sure if I'd let my step daughter look at it and she's nearly 16!!

My Mam bought me the Usborne book and it was really useful. It explained things in an easy to understand way, and I'm pleased she gave it to me.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Have a look in your local library... I was really surprised at the variety and number of "facts of life" etc books at my library..... you'll be bound to find one that suits there.... :D

I looked on Amazon and founds heaps of them!

One was great (my daughter is 8) and is called Girls Only!, do a search on Amazon and you will find it.

I didn't buy it there though, I made a list of the ones I was intrested in and reserved them all at my library (have a son too who is nearly 10 so needed boys books too)

So in the end the cost was £0 and the kids are now informed! :)

  • Just been reading this post and wondering at what age does everyone think girls should be reading these kinds of books? I have an almost 8 year old daughter and the thought of these things have'nt even crossed my mind yet!

  • I've just done the (very) basics with my 6 year old... she asked me tonnes of questions about it all... how babies get into tummies, why only ladies have babies etc etc... so I bit the bullet and we spent an hour or so talking about it and reading "my amazing journey" - click here which seemed to satisfy her curiosity... hasn't really mentioned it since!

I do think she's old enough to grasp the basics and understand it at 6... we've had a few year 7 girls at my school who have started "experimenting" with sex and I can't help but think that their parents have left it too late... perhaps if they were told the concequences of having sex (as well as the joys etc) they might have waited....
