DIY Underwear - am I crazy!?

So in the spring cleaning I found huge amounts of stretch lace in hot pink and have decided to make underwear from it. It's the right width to make some rather nice underwear I think and after researching online (And finally finding some free patterns) I'm going to give it a go later on today.

So has anyone else tried this or do you all want to nut me off now before disaster strikes?

The large amount of lace was driving me nuts so I think I have to try something. May confuse my OH a tad that I'll have about 15 pairs of bright pink lacy boyshorts if this works!

Any other ideas for stretchy lace material would be very much appreciated, in case I mess this one up! If I don't I shall post a photo of the finished product.

These are not free patterns but they are well drafted and easy to make. I love making lingerie, it's very easy and you can trim them with as much or little lacy stuff as you like. Boy shorts are super-easy, try pattern no 3167 for those.

That was my theory, gorgeous knickers cost a fortune!

I am using these websites and their patterns, plus adapting them of course using my favourite pair of my own underwear. So far I've cut the shapes and it doesn't seem too hard. But I suppose it depends on your choice of material!

Very enterprising!

My mum used to make her own underwear esp pants & petticoats (plus nighties, dressing gowns etc etc) but as this was the 1960s the pants were more like french knickers.

I remember being very impressed with the pretty fabrics (I was in white cotton interlock at the time Well, I was 4!)

Hi I made loads of undies when I bought a whole load of very cheap silk remnants (think it was a Liberty store closing down).

You do need some lining for the crotch - I used cotton interlock. Sow the crotch piece and liner inside out, with either the front or back between the two surfaces, round both sides and the end (make sure the it will face the right way) and then turn the crotch right side out, encasing the side seams. Then stitch the remaining end to the front/back (whichever you did not use previously).

I also had a load of very pretty cotton lace, so trimmed my white nics with that. And made one or two matching slips.

Took a while stitching by hand but I'm quite pleased with my first attempt. Going to draft my pattern smaller next time to make them a bit tighter as the lace gives a bit more than I'd anticipated but they work!
