Home Insurance confused HELP please

over the past few years we have claimed twice for accidental damage in our home once the radiator burst ruining the floor and another time there was water damage to our TV. The floor was around 4 years ago and the TV was around 3 years ago. We took new insurance out with Esure and when we were in our house 1 month my son flooded us by leaving the bath running (we have no luck with water) so I called the insurance company and they set about clearing things up etc. A couple of days later we received a letter from them saying they were revoking our insurance as we had not disclosed all information. The information we had not given was 2 queries one was when we had a party and someone burned out sofa, I queried about this but didnt claim as we could get it fixed cheaper than the excess and the other was I lost my diamond bracelet and I called to see if this was covered, it was not. Can they do this on these grounds and also now when we apply for new home insurance are we going to have to say we have been refused home insurance? They have really baffled me as we have only made 2 claims in 5 years?

Thanks

Yes, them revoking your insurance does mean you will have to tell other companies if they ask.

You have made two claims, but had more incidents, which is where you have been caught.
  • I dont understand though as when you go through the forms it asks you how many claims you have made and we have only made 2? That is like actually querying how much something costs but not buying it but you still pay for it? There is not a bit on the forms that asks how many incidents have you queried about so I really dont understand this.

The question covers this by asking (something like) if you have had claims or losses.
  • Still confused though as we did not make a claim and this had no impact on the insurance company as they did not have to pay anything out, so in future if I enquiry about anything this will go against us? so best keeping quiet. I really did not realise this and was not trying to pull the wool over their eyes but this upsets me as for making two simple phone calls we have been seriously penalised.

    Thanks for your help

It does impact their assessment of the risks involved in covering you.

Your losses made you a worse prospect than someone who just had 2 claims. Not declaring them properly just helped add to your "not wanted" status.
  • one of the enquiries was over 4 years ago and the other was 3 years ago that is pretty unfair though.

To be fair you were unfair on the company, and other customers had to subsidise your premium because it wasn't set properly.

Now they have taken this action, there is no reason why you shouldn't appeal and tell them you did this "in ignorance" without wanting to get an advantage and ask them to reconsider. As it stands, you have nothing to lose!
