Please can someone help Eon bill wrong!

Options
I have lived in my flat for around 4 years, and have a normal meter, my supplier is EON. Electric only, no one there during the day till around 8pm.

They have been reading my meter over the last few years, as they have told me the dates that they have done this.

Last month I got a letter saying "notice of high bill" (this is electricity only I am talking about). I called them up and gave them the readings, they then said they would change the bill as the high bill is not correct.

I then got another call asking me to read them 1 hour apart, I did this for them and they said it has not moved much.

A friend was with me and he looked and there is a BIG sticking inside on the front of the meter that says 1, LOW 2,NORM. they have messed my reading up and they have been getting them round the wrong way for some time, maybe 2-3 years! they have addmitted this on the phone as they have been sending someone round to take regular readings, so I am not at fault

I have said who's fault is this! they have said its the reader and there error.

They have now said I am going to get a really high bill! I cant pay this, what is my situation please. as this has been dumped on me all of a sudden, if you understand.

Where do I stand here please? does anyone know the Eon system, so that I can get them to start again on this?

Please help.

David

Wait for the bill and see how large it is.

If it is too big to pay all at once, contact the supplier and see if they will agree to a payment plan - most will in this type of situation allowing you time to pay off the bill.

Unfortunately there is a joint responsibilitry when it comes down to energy billing, and part of that responsibility is for you to check the billed amounts and tell the supplier as soon as you think there is an error.

  • I don't understand? I have been getting the bills, but as I am never at the propery I though they were correct?

They have been reading the meter on a regular basic, if you understand. but they have not done this correctly? they have mixed all the readings up?

Surely this is there fault? what is the back billing rule? I have done the correct thing and always paid, they have always read the meter? but they have been doing this wrong.

What willl go on here, should I go legal on this, as you can 100% I am not at fault.

    Hi David,

This is what is called a ‘transposed reads’ issue. As you guess, it means the readings have switched so in effect you have been paying for your day usage at the night unit price and vice versa.

The mix up occurs where the supplier and the Data Collectors (meter readers) have the meter details set up differently. For example the supplier has ‘day’ and ‘night’ whilst the DC has ‘R1’ AND ‘R2’.

So if the DC enters the actual day reading on R1 but the supplier has R1 set up as the night reading the switch occurs.

Another way this happens is when a customer provides the readings incorrectly (the wrong way round) and they follow on from the previous billing the switch has occurred again.

The way the corrected bill is dealt with depends on many factors, I some cases you may be entitled to a reduction to the amount you have to pay, you will most certainly be able to have a payment arrangement to help spread the bill payments, make sure you ask! ;)

The size of the corrected bill will really depend on how long the reads have been transposed; try checking old bills for an idea see if you can spot when the switch took place. If it’s been wrong for an excessive time period, you’re more likely to receive a reduction.

    Hope this helps. :)

Back billing is for when you haven't been billed at all. I'm pretty sure in your case, they are only obliged to give you time to pay the balance.

I understand this, but it does have a big sticker on what is high and what is low, no error of mine. your company has sent the person round for the last few years and they have taken the readings. I have done nothing wrong as you can see, your people have taken the reading and the sticker is there?

As you can see i have done nothing wrong and always paid what was asked. I did not read this wrong, the EON people have .

It's not about blaming someone or deciding who is at fault.

A mistake has been made. The mistake has now been identified and measures are being put in place to rectify that mistake.

You will be required to pay for what you have consumed. Await a new bill with the corrections.

When you checked the reads on the bill against the meter, did you spot the reads were the wrong way round?
When you called Powergen/Eon to advise them the reads were the wrong way round what did they say?
As above, you need to take responsibilty for the bills you pay. I can't think of any other bill taht people pay without checking at all that they have used what they are paying for.

Ask for a reduction, and as long to pay it back as it took to build up, and then switch to Eon's cheapest tariff as you'll nbe with them until it is cleared.
