Changing address on Bank accounts

I would like the opinions of people who have changed their address on their bank accounts - I will be moving soon and have a number of accounts of mine and parents to switch.

What is the best way to change address for each of these banks?
HSBC
Halifax
A+L
A+L CC (MBNA)
Abbey
Barclays
Egg

The options are branch, phone, internet - has anyone experience of just updating their details on the internet? Also do they require proof of your new address?

My OH changed his address via a form which he posted to Lloyds TSB with our new address on in September 08. In January 09 he checked his credit report only to find that Lloyds had changed his address to something similar, one letter was wrong in the the street name and the post code was also similar except it ended 0AF instead of 0BZ. However we checked and this was a real address. This other address was about 5 miles away and luckily he doesn't get paper statements so it could have been really bad. Well done lloyds for giving a stranger all our bank details, so much for data protection. Plus the address is on his credit report and we are fighting lloyds to make them remove the address from his record completely.
  • Barclays:

By telephone banking if you have a telephone banking passcode.
By going into branch with your passport/full UK photo driving licence.
By writing in to the correspondence address on your statement.

I had to get a company to remove an address from my credit report so below is what I basically did -

Write to the Data Controller of Lloyds and ask them under the Data Protection Act 1998 to correct the information and remove it from his credit report. Give them 40 days to do this and make sure you ask for a reply in your letter. Also state if they don't do this you will make a complaint to the Information Commissioner and may take other action. You need to send the letter by recorded delivery.

If after exactly 40 days you don't hear from write another letter to them again sent by recorded delivery giving them a further 14 days to reply to your previous letter. Again use recorded delivery.

After the 14 days go on to the Information Commissioner website and fill in a complaint form. You can do it all online by scanning in your recorded delivery slips and letters.

It may take 2 to 3 months for the Information Commissioner to write to Lloyds but once they do you should have your data amended. If you don't have recorded delivery slips the Information Commissioner can't act.

HSBC, just use internet banking, it worked for me.
Keep a spreadsheet to keep track of which companies you've informed and which companies have confirmed that they've actioned your request!
You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.

If the account lets you do it online, then you only yourself to blame if its wrong!

One difficulty I have found is when they ask for a postcode and partial address to 'find' it for you. Because I have an RAF address this does not always work correctly and if there is no manual option can be a pain as it takes longer for the mail to arrive.

Have just done this a 2nd time - for anyone who wants to know:

HSBC: Last time took in my passport and changed it in branch
Changed it on website this time

Halifax: Changed in branch both times (no online option) - they ask to see passport

Barclays: Last time - changed in branch at counter showed passport

This time: went to counter but was told I had to see an advisor - waited for ages for one to become available - got bored - left

Went to another branch on way home - changed at counter, was asked to enter my pin into pinsentry

A+L - Allow you to do it online and send a confirmation letter in the post

    Egg - done online

Abbey - have to go into branch

Some counter teams are allowed to do it, some are not - it's at the branch and counter manager's discretion.

    Just FYI.
