Car Hire for New Drivers

I need some help please.

I am looking to go on holidays to Portugal along with my girlfriends and we looking to hire a car, however no one is brave enough to drive abroad except me who has just been to Portugal and driven a friend's car.

We need to rent a car but most of the car hire companies require you to have held your license for at least one year, i have had it since the 26th Feb

Does anyone know a car hire company who has no requirement as such?

Try Holiday Autos as they are a "broker" for car hire so they may be able to find someone for you
  • I have just emailed them i will see what they say. Thanks very much for your reply thou

The other important factor will be your age. Some firms are more interested in you being 21/23/25 than your experience on the basis a 25 year old will be a safer driven even if he has driven for less time.

Very unlikely that with less than 12 months you will get hire.

Spends also on what age you are like SPIRO said.

Portugal is the worse place in Europe for road deaths they have some crazy drivers.

You will find it very difficult to get care hire. My son was 21 and 3 years driving and found it very difficult to get hire. We eventually got it through carjet but had a bother at airport when he went to get the car.Reluctantly they gave him one as they had accepted his booking and new his age as we specified it at time of booking.
Sorry for being nasty but In my opinion you are very inexperienced to be driving abroad. The roads and drivers are very dangerous out there. When I was in Spain a month ago 3 English women got killed on way from airport to their apartment just because they were unsure of the roads. So I really would think carefully
  • thanks very much for your reply.. i think i managed to pursuade one of my friends who has been driving for 5 years to drive whilst on holidays.
I am Portuguese and just been there last month and drove my mum's car, i didn't find it any more different than driving here, as long as you not driving like a racer...

Most foreign car hire companies (particularly in the U.S.) will only insure drivers who have held their full licence for 6 months minimum. Have you aproached your car insurer in the U.K. to see if they can extend your cover for the E.U. and provide a certificate of insurance which would be acceptable to car hire companies over there?
I'm insured with my bank and know that they provide this service and will organise the hire for me.
