  • I had the same thing happen to me in WH Smith but didn't realise for a couple of days :o Anyway, I phoned the store and they were more than happy to do a refund when I was next in the store, as long as I had my receipt. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Totally agree with everyone elses comments, please go back, and please let us know how you get on. Good luck (but I'm sure you won't need luck):)
Are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

Sorry didn't mean it to sound like you would be rude to the staff :o Its not your fault though, the assistant should have noticed it had scanned twice. Those scanner things can be very sensitive.

I didn't take it as such, I know you were giving me a heads up :)

No it is not your fault for the overcharge, you are only guilty of not checking your receipt. Don't tell Primark it is your fault, just state the facts- you brought one pair of jeans and were charged for two. Should be simple and straightforward. I would be very surprised if they did not give you your money back. Remember to take your credit/debit card with you if you paid for it with a card. Look and sound genuinely devasted by the error (which you are!!!). And don't take no for an answer. Ask for a manager if you don't get anywhere with the CS. Remain calm and collected.

    Good Luck!

Absolutely, I'm on the verge of a mini tear! Thank you though, I will take everything with me.

WH Smith is very reasonable (I used to work for them :) ) I've seen Primark be very unreasonable and I'm a bit of a wuss! But thank you I will do.

I used to work in clothes retail, and it happened occasionally, we would refund no questions asked.

Well if its any help, I have worked in both River Island and Arcadia (home of Topshop, Wallis, Burton...etc) and we had this happen before (admittedly rarely) what we would do is ask the customer to hang on whilst we checked or had the manager check the store CCTV and verify how many items were bought.
Always got things sorted in the customers favor as the CCTV is v.clear. (apparently 60% of retail theft is staff related so this is a v.clear camera we are talking about, personally I think its probably managers of managers abusing their positions rather then shop floor staff but thats another story...)

Just go back, you wont be the first and unfortunately wont be the last to have this happen.

Definitely go back and explain. DH and I had this happen to us recently in Ikea - we were charged twice for an item that we only bought one of and twice for an item we didn't have in our bags when we got home. The nice customer service assistant credited us for both the item we were overcharged for and the items we were missing.

Thank you everyone, I know it sounded like a trivial concern but I have heard some shops being unreasonable about these things. I had no problems however, I had a lovely lady on the returns till.
But it's definitely something I will now make a habit of; checking my receipt before leaving the shop!:D

I should have believed my mum in the first place! Lesson learnt...
