made small mistake on uni form!

Options
I'm applying for the GTTR teacher training. I made a mistake on my form about the year of one of my gcses. I did italian at night school in 2001 and got a C, but it was about 4 years after my school gcses.

When I was filling in the form, I automatically listed all my gcses together. Looking back at it, I realised what I'd done- listed them all under the same year and institution heading. I don't NEED this gcse for my course, but am a little worried it would look like I'd fiddled it if I'm asked to give them the certificate, (which incidentally I don't think I have) to make it look like I did three language GCSES at the same time (have French and German too) and am paranoid they'll know anyway as it's the same uni I did my undergrad course at so if there is some kind of discrepancy with my details they'll see?
OMG I'm being stupid aren't I??

I have visions of me being hauled into interview asking to explain myself and being accused of fraud!

I don't think it's much of an issue as you haven't lied about a qualification, you've just got mixed up about the dates. However the fact you did the GCSE in your own time more recently than you did your GCSEs at school may actually be in your favour - independent learning, willingness to keep studying etc...
Therefore it may be in your best interests to call the admissions office and mention the error. They're not likely to dismiss your application because of it, but it may work in your favour and it'll stop you worrying.

Personally I wouldn't do anything about it except stop worrying! You haven't committed fraud and I doubt that anyone will care less.
  • Thanks, i know it's a stupid thing, but its just they are really strict about you signing declarations saying you have not lied or given misleading info about qualifications and dates and if i do so i understand i will be investigated! its just given me the willies thats all! i rang them up and the guy there didn't seem too bothered and if i get an offer he says it might be worth telling somebody in case somebody thinks its amiss.

First thing to do seems to be to get hold of a copy of the certificate from the college or exam board. If you actually have the qualification but have the dates wrong, it's not as bad as appearing to have fabricated a qualification.

I think he's right. You made a small error on the form but you didn't lie as you've got the qualification concerned. Yes they condemn fraud, and you'd be right to worry that they might find out, but if you volunteer the information if and when they give you an offer there'll be nothing to worry about. Chances are they'll say they don't care in the slightest, but it always pays to be honest. For now, though, don't worry!

I always group my gcse's together when filling out forms... it's easier because otherwise i never have enough space on the form to put each institution down

I've never had a problem and ive filled out loads of forms

    Don't worry =)

I wouldn't worry to be honest it's and easy mistake to make (I did it with my A-levels and nobody noticed). Also bear in mind it is quite a way back in your qualification history too given you are applying for a grad scheme. You've called them, they weren't bothered and you can explain if anyone queries. best of luck with your application, cel x

It's also worth bearing in mind that you will have an interview for anywhere considering you so if you're totally paranoid you could mention it then. Also, when you do get accepted, you are required to show certain certificates - usually degree certificate and GCSE maths and english. That said as long as you're not planning on becoming a languages teacher, noone will probably care!
