You are right about the resorts becoming commercial hellholes. For that reason tour operators are best avoided. (Kosmar are about the best, I agree.)

Independent travelling isn't difficult with a bit of planning and a sense of adventure. A good first attempt would be to get the bus from the airport to Rafina, and then go down the northern Cyclades line to Andros, Tinos, and then perhaps Syros or Paros. The travel is straightforward, and does not require crossing Athens. Avoid the peak season and these places are idyllic.
  • So many different answers, much to think aabout and don't worry I will. What if did not say is that my husband is disabled, this is one of hte major reasons we have not a lot of money as I have been unable to work full time for many years. He walks with cruthces and had a stroke just a little under two years ago, he is also a diabetice but thankfullyis not insulin dependent. He is game for most things and will have a try, although he cannot really cope with spontinaity.

My suggestion of Santorini probably not such a good idea then. Kos town might be a possibility if you can find a hotel near to the harbour. Its fairly flat has a busy harbour and there are things to see around the town and boat trips from the harbour. When you go have a great time. Bear in mind its very hot in high season try May or sept/early oct.
