On what grounds can an Employer ask for a CRB check on an Employee

If the employee doesn't come into contact with Vulnerable adults or Children what rights does an employer have?
Also would it make any difference if the 'employee' was classed as self-employed in terms of eligibility for a CRB check?
Thanks

My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say
Ignore......check!

An employer can do a CRB check on their employees if they are handling money etc - they need to know that their employee is trustworthy.0

As far as im aware i havent been asked to be CRB checked and i handle money every week and have done for numerous years, i work in a supermarket if it helps0 -
In my NHS trust, we crb staff working with vulnerable adults or children, handling money or dealing with confidential info.
At present, we've done:
frontline staff
clinicians
HR
Finance
A manager can pretty much decide if their staff need to be crb & make it a condition of employment. I've had ALL my staff crb checked, my opposite number in another trust hasn't."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -
Not so. As well as the links Jona gave, there is a comprehensive list here of the other situations in which a CRB check may be required.I believe it is unlawful to ask for a CRB check if the employee is not wokring with children, etc.
Do any of them cover the OP's situation?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
That is exactly the point the BBC article was making - jobs such as finance, etc are not covered by the CRB requirements which relate only to working with children, vulnerable adults, etc.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

I hold both enhanced CRB (done when I invigilated at a school last summer) and Disclosure Scotland (done by my employer as I have access to personal and financial records for the biggest tv/internet conpany's customers).
Certainly is not illegal -and if you've been honest on your job application then what's the problem ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
But some jobs such as finance ARE covered by the CRB requirements, eg if you keep scrolling down that link I gave:That is exactly the point the BBC article was making - jobs such as finance, etc are not covered by the CRB requirements which relate only to working with children, vulnerable adults, etc.
For National Lottery licensing purposes. For the purpose of licensing hackney carriage or private hire vehicle drivers. For the purpose of safeguarding national security. For the purpose of licensing under Section 8 of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.
For the award of public works contracts, public supply contracts and public service contracts in accordance with Directive 2004/17/EC and 2004/17/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of March 2004(a) Football Stewards, supervisors or managers of football stewards
I am aware that some employers are wanting to carry out checks when they should not be doing so, nevertheless the scope for checks is not limited to working with children or vulnerable adults.
BTW, we haven't answered the OP's question about whether an employer can require one of someone who is actually self-employed, and the answer is I don't know! If you gave a bit more detail about the circumstances I might be able to work it out.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

If an employer has a job to offer which justifies a CRB check, then they can refuse to confirm someone in post if they do not agree to a CRB check.
If the 'employee' is actually self-employed and refused, then the 'employer' would simply be able to refuse to use their services. Self-employed people cannot obtain CRB checks on themselves.0
