House Removal Company

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but it is house related!
Moving house in the next few weeks and in the position to appoint a removal firm. We did look into doing it ourselves, but we are moving quite a distance and decided to hire a firm to take the stress out of it.
Got 6 quotes, highest £1,700, lowest £1,000 (exc VAT). Does anyone have any good / bad experiences with certain removal firms that I should avoid. I won't post the names of the highest and lowest companies at the moment. Some are local, but I believe the majority of quotes are from national carriers.

How big is the house and how far are you moving? That sounds a lot!Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

Blimey, that sounds really expensive, we recently moved from a 4 bed semi to a 4 bed detached, they came in at 8am, and in all it was 5 hours, and they were gone! they were fab. It cost us £600. what part of the country are you in - roughly. I have always stayed away from the big multi national ones and gone for the local removal companys.0

Moving over 500 miles; from South England to Scotland. 3 bed house. I can get my head around the costs when broken down into 2 or 3 staff and the fact that it is a good 10 hours drive there and then back again.
Will need driver for way up and back down, potentially overnight stay. Working Time Directive would mean driving would be shared and speed limiter would make it a long journey!
Staff and fuel will be a good few hundred pounds. One way van hire for 2 days would cost me £400 + Fuel.0 -
Its not working time directive that governs the drivers hours it driving hours rules , the prices you have quoted seem reasonable , there will be a big difference in price because the removal market is slower then normal hence some companies going in at lower prices to get the work . Recommendaton is always the best way to go , if you dont have that , look at what professional bodies they belong to . Also what impression you had of the surveyor did they seem to know what they were talking about , did they spend time with you talking about their service and asking you want you wanted ?0

I and members of my family have used Pickfords on a number of occasions. All were: into storage in a container, out of storage in a container.
Other services used were:
- packing service
- part-load delivery (it's cheaper, you tell them a date the property is yours and they deliver the container/s when they're passing so you might only get half your stuff one week and the rest the next - I got both containers together so I was lucky)
Always found them to be good. That packing service was worth its weight in gold (I saw them speed-packing 1000 ornaments/glasses/pictures in somebody's house when I was there helping them move).0
