it's panic stations here... i applied for a BSc in mental health nursing at notts as my partner and i are going to uni together. OH has an unconditional offer, just waiting to hear back for me now.
i called them up to check on the status of my app and they said they had it- but NO interview dates, nor would there be likely to have any for a while, because no people were avaialable to do it, so they did interviews early since last term. They operate first come first served, and you get told on the day if you have a place. I said well are you saying i won't get in?
he said "yeah probably"
he said my only chance was to come for an interview for the january intake... eek! OH is going uni in october and we had planned our finances to be both going at the same time! now what? i might have to look for a job in a new city? and what if i don't get one? can we claim whilst one of us is a student?
he was being very vague, and i am having a hard time believing that a uni course is fully booked up in feb, but then he said to me "we'll interview you for the january intake this year"
it all seems so screwed up and unfair. i have a really strong application, an existing degree and a good academic reference, yet my app has been sitting in a pile!
What do you think my chances are now? Has anybody got into the place they wanted through clearing? he said some might drop out, some might not get in, we might find a place for you, we might not...
now i feel i'm in limbo. Is he being deliberately vague or have I had my chips?

Who did you speak to one the phone? Was it the admissions tutor?0

yeah i think so- i was put through to him when i said i had a question about whether i could get in."What...? I was only saying...."0

Given your current financial problems, wouldn't it actually be a good thing for you to work for a year whilst your partner's a student. As he's not going to get the funding for next year, having one half of the partnership bringing in an income would be ideal.0

yeah, looking on the bright side that's what i was thinking, but i'm a bit scared in case i don't get work! especially with how things are at the moment. its doing our heads in as we've had financial uncertainty all year!"What...? I was only saying...."0

I am a nursing student at Notts (3rd year) and I know plenty of people who were told they wouldn't get in due to numbers, but most of them did! This is due to people taking up places at other uni's, changing their mind and so on. When you do get your interview they will ask you if you can start early so if you can say yes!!

I got a place in clearing but i started Sept 06 and mental health has become a lot more popular. Dont be disheartened though nursing courses always get oversubscribed but loads drop out before the start of the course so if you get an interview for a later cohort ask to be put on the provisonal list for the next intake you will probably get this.
It seems odd they are closed, i work on the nursing interviews for my uni and they are interviewing all through April and beyond for people on the provisional & Jan intakes.
Is there any chance of commuting for you? I only say this as im in sheffield and have friends who commute from nottingham and nearing towns becuase they did not like the degree/diploma that Nottingham offers. Please dont take that to mean there is anything wrong with nottinghams degree i think they had person specific reasons for not wanting to go there but if there are any cities you could realistically commute to maybe its worth a look. - Obviously youll have to factor in the expense though.0 -
I know several people who actually applied for the January intake and they were all contacted and asked if they could start in the September, so there is hope yet.
You say you have an existing degree, so are you sure are able to get funding?0 -
Excuse me for getting personal. You do say a bit about your relationship. If you are serious enough about each other to be wanting to go to the same place. Are you serious enough to be thinking of marriage. If you are presently tied to the assessment of parental income this link is severed once people get married.
No you shouldn't get married just for the extra maintenance grant you will almost certainly get if your income is under the 58,000 ish threshold. But if you are committed enough to be studying together in the same place might this help with your finances.
Best wishes0
