Well i have got the hilton and the hyatt in San Francisco for $80 a night so i dont think i am stretching it too much with $50 for a good hotel to spend the night in.

Its more the area i am looking for as i will be able to name my own price on priceline to get them at a good price.

I will be in LA for nights of 2nd and 3rd of April and San Diego for 4th and 5th April.

I am a bit lost now, if you know you can get an hotel for $50, why are you asking? and you still havnet said which area you want

What I normally do is use https://www.hotelscomparison.com to find the cheapest hotels available, then do a bit of research on them (Tripadvisor etc.). Soon enough you find a reasonable hotel, hopefully at a price that also suits your budget.

I don't have any experience of LA or SD but I would suggest $50 a night is a bit optimistic for anywhere I would consider as 'decent'.

Try Days Inn, these are inexpensive and generally very good value for money.

I am asking people for the better areas to stay in the 2 cities as i know you can get very cheap places to stay but may not be in the nicest areas.

So all i am asking really is for people to let me know what areas of the cities are the nicer parts to stay in but still to get resonable price on the motel/hotel/B&B rooms.

Well if you got a hotel for $80 is San Fran getting one for $50 is obviously a gimme for LA!
I've just had a quick look in LA for the dates given and there are a couple of hotels that are less than $50. They look way out of the way.
I for one are still not sure what you're looking for in LA.
I've been to LA about 10 times and as mentioned before always stop near the airport as the hotels tend to be cheaper. To get anywhere / see the sights in LA you need a car (which it sounds like you have) so hotel location is not important.
If you're looking for the better areas, which in my opinion are Long Beach, Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey you'll be hitting over $100 easily.
You might want to look at these on priceline.
  • My niece stayed at the Dana on Mission Bay last summer in San Diego. Great location - she paid then £124 per twin room per night. This was their luxury after a few weeks of hostels around California!
