Dilemma

OK here's my dilemma...........

Basically I'm being made redundant when my current contract ends in July and I will be entitled to a redundancy payment for my 6 years service here. Obviously the ideal scenario would be that I would find a job soon therefore stay in employment and also get my redundancy payment.

However, a position has become available in the same company on a different project to the one I'm being made redundant on. It is a fixed term 1 year contract to cover maternity leave.

Should I apply for this job? Chances are I would be offered it.

I could either take my redundancy and hopefully get a job elsewhere (hopefully) or go fopr the job therefore effectively resigning from my current position and therefore won't be due any redundancy payment.

Any advice or thoughts would be gratefully received.

How much do you stand to gain from your redundancy?

Anyway, perhaps you could talk to the people involved with the possible new job and express interest, but not put in a formal application. They should understand your situation, and might agree to accept a late application once you have got your hands on the redundancy money.

You should also seek advice from a trade union or ACAS about how European Law affects your entitlement to redundancy. As I understand the position (but I am not a lawyer so please check this out) once you have worked for the same organisation for more than five years you have a right to redundancy money even if you come to the end of a fixed-term contract. So I think that if you were to move to this temporary contract and then at the end of it were made redundant, you would still get the full amount for your six plus one years service.
