Burnham on sea - what to do there

Hi all

we are going tp Haven Burnham on sea 1st week of July for a week.

We have looked on line and have a list of possible days out with the children (6 and 2 during the week we are away!)

But could I have your recommendations for places to go - either paid attractions or even beaches, parks that would be worth a visit.

Any ideas of child friendly restaurants would also be helpful - as we don't cook very often on holiday - we are prepared to travel 10-15 miles to eat - and we could always go on the way home from a day out as we eat early for the childen. I have a list of national chains but some independents or any of the chains to avoid would be great.

Lastly - I have not read many great reports of the Haven site there - can anyone give me an honest opinion of what it is like - we always book the gold caravans (called prestige now I think!) for the heating and tend to go out most days. But some info on the entertainment venue and the facilities would be really welcome

Thanks

great area for a base enjoy haven and all the things happening for your kids and the kid in you. HAve a trip inland go towards Cheddar /Axebridge area have a drive stop at many pub grub places some cater for kids with fantastic choices and play areas. Breen sands are a good day out and you used to be able to drive onto the sand (dont know if still can ) great for family nicpics and all . Weston is just a shopping town nowt special Glasonbury/Wells both good places but hard for buggies wheelchairs etc nice trinket sort of shops but firstly make the most of haven site and enjoy the kids will love it . Good pool too
 hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world
  • Stayed at Haven in Burnham a couple of times when my boy was 3-4 years old (wife has friends in Weston!). Wonderful site, right by the beach.

From there, we did Longleat, Minehead (steam railway there and, if you're lucky, you might time it for a "Thomas" day/weekend like we did) and Clarks Village in Street (outlet shopping village/centre, ideal for bargains).

Also, Bristol is not too far for more shopping and the zoo is wonderful for the kids.

Longleat is good - I don't know if they still do it but they used to do some sort of passport thing that meant you could visit as many times as you liked over a period of time.
I stayed at the haven site a few years back, so it may have changed, but from what I can remember the facilities were fine, the caravan ( basic one) was of a far better standard than we expected and a good time was had by all.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Burnham's a bit awful, but then most of the Somerset resorts on the Bristol Channel are, as the water is normally brown & horrible.

However, there are some lovely places nearby my children love Noah's Ark Zoo Farm which is near Bristol & have been there loads & loads of times.

In Berrow (which is nearer to Brean) is Animal Farm.

Depending on how adventurous your children are you can buy tickets for Brean Leisure Park with your tesco vouchers.

Weston-Super-Mare is ok my kids used to love it on the pier (it burnt down last year :o ), but there's still a massive beach and the donkey rides :j

Longleat will be a bit of a drive, but well worth it as it's a whole day out and again you can buy tickets with Tesco vouchers.
Wookey Hole is again a bit of a drive from Brean, but you could combine it with Cheddar Gorge for a day out.

To be honest though if they are anything like my 2 (who are similar ages to yours) they will just want to go in the swimming pool and on the beach!

    Have a good holiday

PS The Longleat tickets are still Passports which mean they are valid for more than one day.
  • The Haven site at Burnham on sea is the best one we have been to. It is laid out really nicely around the fishing lakes. My husband is a keen fisherman so you can see the appeal for him.

We have a 3 year old who generally enjoyed being in a caravan, the kids clubs on site are quite good and the beach.

The one place we go to each time we have been to Burnham is Animal Farm. Ideal for little ones.

Brean Leisure park is a nice funfair -you can get a kiddies wristband for the smaller rides and can use tesco days out vouchers. Wookey hole is fun for all ages too, we had a lovely day out there last year.

If you want somewhere to eat in Cheddar - go to the Riverside at base of the Gorge. Nice garden with the river running through it and a big slide in a childrens play area. Never seem to be any vouchers about for discount on caves.

If you go to Wookey Hole - vouchers about for money off most of the time. The Wookey Hole Inn opp the car park - superb food - bit pricey - Child and dog friendly , crayons on tables etc. Wells is just 5 mins away and well worth a visit.

    Puxton Park, Hewish near Weston-super-mare.

    Tropiquaria, Watchet. Discounts about.

Brean Leisure Park, Discouns on wristbands about.

Alstone Wildlife Park, Highbridge - if still open, more like a farm but good fun for young children, feeding the animals.

    Court Farm, Banwell.

Secret World Animal Rescue, Highbridge - if open.

If you go to Minehead - Hairy Dog Pub, in the high street - bigest play area you have ever seen, good food too.
