Long Standing Meter Mess

Options
We switched our gas supplier in Oct 2008 from Southern Electricity and paid them up.

Its now emerged (through the new supplier Eon) that our gas meter was changed while Southern Electric were our supplier. The meter was replaced in June 2007 from imperial to metric. You would think then we were over paying from June 2007 to Oct 2008 BUT the new meter was not registered and therefore Southern Electric a) continued to bill us as if the the meter readings were imperial rather than metric AND b) they were unaware that our meter reading were taken from zero. It seems odd this wasnt picked up but they have only ever estimated our bills and then final one was a wrong reading.

I am not sure how to proceed. Do we go back to our old supplier and say hey we may owe you lots or money or what? Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would get all the details from your current supplier about the meter they have recorded as installed and check this against the physical meter at your house. You may also find details by the meter indicating when it was changed and the meter readings. Armed with all of this then phone your old supplier and claim your money back. If you have any old bills you may be able to work this out in advance of calling.

  • Thanks Spiro. When the meter was put in, in June 2007 it seems to have been set to 0. Based on that, and what it is now and working backwards on a daily rate of 5 units a day to October 2008 when we switched I think we owe the old supplier £500-£600!

Has anyone been in this situation? It seems odd because as far as Southern Electricity were concerned we were signed off and paid up. Is this a case of limitation through back billing?

Unless they owe you money I would leave it, there is 99.9999% change they will not notice as the supply has left them.
  • Rian1988 - that's reassuring and I hope so, but Eon will be contacting Southern Electric because their final meter reading was wrong (Oct 08) - only now, five months later we have only made it to the final 'reading'! I wonder then if this contact will disturb things?
