£200 a month gas bill

Options
Hi,

I've had a look through the site and it seems as if I'm paying way to much for my gas, but I wanted to detail my circumstances to check that i'm not going mad.

3 adults in a 3 bedroom semi-detatched house, windows are double glazed but very old and not that good. I'm not sure about insulation or other efficiency factors (we rent)

We have the heating/water on from 6:00-9:00 and 4:30-10:00 every day, we also have a gas hob which we use probably every other day to cook with.

The heating has been on a bit more in the last month when it was very cold with the snow, but while we're all at work (9:00-4:30, monday - friday) the heating and water are both off.

We've just received a gas bill from British gas for £200 for 1 month. We've checked the meter and it matches near enough.

Is there something majorly wrong here? Do you think we have a dodgy boiler/meter/central heating system?

I have spoken to the landlady and she keeps saying she'll send someone round to have a look at the boiler... Is there anything else we can do? (we have already restricted the heating/water to 1 hour in the morning only)

    It could be right!

What temperature do you heat the house to? And what are the meter readings (+ imperial or metric)?

Was the start meter reading correct?

£200 for a month in a 3 bed semi is very high - but people have reported worse.

Assuming both meter reading are accurate, it could be a number of factors.

    Poor insulation.

    Low efficiency of boiler.

    High temperatures in house.

    Lots of baths.

9.5 hours per day(weekends more?) is quite a long time.

Do you have a metric or imperial meter?

Are you being charged for metric (x11 to get approx kwh) or imperial (x31 to get approx kwh) units?

we have our heating on average say 6-8am and then evening it's like 4.30-10pm with cooking in the evening. for our 3 months which i thought was high came in at £222, 2 people, small semi new build 4 bed.

but our quarter before was like £180, so i put the slight increase due to the snow.

    so the £200/month sounds high

Was the end reading of that bill an actual or an estimate?

If it was an estimate, it could have been low and your bill is now recovering that shortfall.
