Car insurance: temporary + cancellations?

Hey..I've got a little bit of a complex situation so I was wondering if anyone could help.

My car insurance is due for renewal soon. Currently, my dad is the policy holder and I am the additional driver (I'm 20yrs old).

1. I'm away from home quite a lot nowadays because of uni, so we want to insure my dad as the main policy holder but be able to add me onto it for 1 month at a time (for example) instead of the entire year

2. In addition, however, we want to find something that we can cancel part-way through if we decide to sell the car.

Are there any insurance companies that can meet these requirements? I'm sure number 1 is possible (any suggestions for that would be great), but what about number 2 as well?

Thanks for any tips/advice!

All companies allow you to cancel part way, and the majority allow 20 year olds as temporary additional drivers.

Before renewing, check the insurer will allow the temporary cover during the year.

Expect to be reminded by others about not attempting any fronting.

And we'd get a (pro-rata) refund even if we pay annually?

And yep I'm aware of the fronting thing...actually I only discovered recently that it's illegal to put a parent as the policyholder and then have the additional driver do all the driving. But now I really don't drive the car that much so hopefully it won't be a problem.

Paying annually usually means you get a refund - if you pay monthly, there is often still a payment to make when you cancel.

Not all company's give a full pro-rata refund (eg some do it on just full unused months, others on a scale, depending on how many months remain).

And expect a cancellation fee to be deducted from the refund. (Or expect to pay this along with any other charges when cancelling a monthly instalment plan)
