What to do with a car seat when it is outgrown?

My daughter has now just about outgrown her infant car seat, and it is unlikely we will be adding a third child to the family. We therefore want to get rid of her car seat, but I just don't know what to do with it. I don't know anyone who could make use of it, and it seems that there is no market for second hand car seats (which I completely understand) having looked at ebay.

But it seems crazy just to put it out with the rubbish as it is in great condition. What did other people do with their car seats?

  • Hi SammyD,

What is the reasoning behind being unable to sell it on Ebay if its in good condition?

If its not been involved in an accident, I can't see a risk.

    I'd be interested to know.

    Cheers

It is just that having looked at the car seats for sale on Ebay, there just don't seem to be any takers. Mind you, some of the listings were pretty rubbish. Maybe I will try loot first like accross suggests.

It is highly recommended you don't buy second-hand car seats, the best thing is to give it away to someone you know, we have spare car seats for other vehicles but these have come from friends we trust. I certainly wouldn't risk my childs life by buying a used seat from a stranger.

i know what youre saying glen the shops wouldnt recommend it but that is up to the person buying it they may have little money and noone they know with child seats to give them as long as you know in your mind the carseat hasnt come to any harm then there is really no difference if the person trusts you and cant afford a brand new one.
  • i sold my baby carrier via an advert in a local supermarket a few years ago only because i knew it was in mint condition - if it had been in an accident i wouldnt have advertised it - i would have binned it - ;)

Don'y buy a car seat that is over 5years old as the plastic starts to fail(manufacturer info). Also only buy from someone you know because then you can trust them when they say it has not been in an accident. It is not worth saving any money when you are risking your child life.

If is is >5years the cut it up so no one else can use ity & throw it in the bin.
