The Budget 2009

Just wondered what people think will be in the budget this year ?

Minimum price on alcohol per unit just seems like a way for the Government to get some extra revenue as many people will take to the drink if out of work an depressed.

Would they increase the prices of ciggies, alcohol and fuel in current climate, surely not ?

I honestly dont know whats going to happen here.

If anything it sohuld be interest rates up but tax cuts, but alas we are never going to get that from this tinpot collection of idiots.

Im actually not caring if they put fags up, as Ive just given up :A - a week smoke free having smoked for 15 years I will never smoke agan - just thought id boast :D Im so proud of myself :j

In fairness, i think its a good time to put the price of fags up they are not essential items. Sooner that than petrol.

I expect we'll see air taxes go up, in that it costs more to land here from flights originating overseas.

We'll start seeing all tese crackpot ideas about being taxed to death for driving a not-brand-new car to get the car market "moving"

Are we about to see Vat going back up

Are we about to see stamp duty dropped for longer " to get first time buyers on the ladder"

Honestly, Ive no idea- but you can gurantee whatever "initiatives" there are, they will be next to pointless.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I think that's one thing you can be sure of.

I think there is likely to be some further fiscal stimulus. Perhaps targetted at the less well off(increased benefits or raising tax thresholds). Perhaps some sort of reward for savers too. Environmental taxes are likely to rise as are alcohol and tobacco.

Well done lynzpower. Just remember that if you have a couple of ciggies doesn't make you a smoker again, it just makes you like Mae West:

"I was Snow White then I drifted."

Good luck with it. It's a tough thing to do.
  • I haven't a clue what they're going to do apart from raise tax on alcohol and fags.

Like you Lynzpower, I don't care how much fags go up to as I'm on Day 16 of not smoking and I don't want to ever smoke again either.

Trouble with slipping up Generali is that then you say to yourself oh well I did it once and didn't start smoking again so I can just do it when I go out/on Friday nights/oh and Saturday nights/every night...oh dear I'm on 20 a day again...

Like the idea of being Mae West though...sounds better than being a failure!

Just wondered what people think will be in the budget this year ?

They need to raise the Tax thresholds (especially the basic rate) by a significant amount...................they won't of course.

  • Make £10k the floor below which noone pays income tax. Make upi for the hole (and the big hole) by increasing the 20p band back up to 22p, and having a new 50p band for high earners.

Or perhaps the best idea to raise money for the exchequer would be to place a tax on all foreigners living abroad.

They could always introduce a 100% Income Tax on Pensions awarded to executives of the Banks bailed out by ordinary Tax Payers.

Wasn't there something vague a while ago about a new income tax band, making a 40k-150k band and a new over 150k band? I remmeber starting a thread which became rather interesting on perceptions of wealth or something like that at the time.

I expect ciggies will go up quite a lot now it's so frowned on - not so sure about booze tho. I had hoped they would give a massive rise in the inheritance tax threshold but now that house prices are dropping they have the excuse not to bother :( Hope they do something to boost pensions now all the poor oldies savings have nosedived.
