I was looking at car rental for a weekend with either of the following four companies:

Avis
Europcar
Hertz
National Alamo

looking through the websites they all charge a deposit on credit card but dont mention how much. Would anyone please be able to say from experiences how much they take off the credit card or do they just keep a print.

They just keep the card number as security. Some it can be £500.

Book a LAguna or Megane for a friday and you have it til Tuesday morning FOC...

Do not book a car with Alamo. If you arrive late to pick up your car, they will re-allocate the car but keep the money. Last week I booked a car from Thursday 6pm to Friday 6pm in order to attend 2 interviews on the Friday 18th December. I went to collect the car from the office a little before 6pm on the Thursday evening, but found it had moved address since the last time I had been there. Nevermind I thought, I'd go first thing Friday morning to collect (already too late to do it on that evening). They had re-allocated the car already - I was there at 8am on the dot! Plus they have refused to pay back the money. Here's part of their response:

The location can not hold a vehicle untill the next day, when the rental has not been collected this is reallocated the following day. There will be no refund as it seems you went to a closed location to collect the hire.

So, if you hire a car with Alamo, and turn up late they will re-allocate the car, even though you've already paid for it!

Not a happy bunny. Especially as I missed both my interviews (the second interview although it was in the afternoon, was in Hemel Hempstead - I went to London to catch a connecting train from Euston, but all trains with London Midland were cancelled)
