Shop assistant who has to do cleaning!!

    Was she on a break when she text you... or actually unpacking the delivery?! If I was her manager I'd not be impressed if she was texting when meant to be working!

    oh this sounds very similar to a high street chain company my eldest daughter worked her socks of for - for a year.......
    change of managers frequently, treat the youngsters like !!!!,
    managers say no holiday at certain times of the year, then book them themselves

    is its name 4 letters long and beginning and has massive sales starting at the crack
    of dawn twice a year?

    my daughter left, found another job within 6 weeks, who paid slightly less but was the best decision she ever made
    smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;) :cool:

    I used to work for that such 4 letter word shop that has huge sales starting very early.

    I was treated fairly and worked hard but I saw a lot of other young people come and go, complain a lot and act stroppy in front of customers. Consequently they were given jobs that didn't involve customer contact. I never had any holiday refused but then I never took sick-leave, hang-over days and never turned up late or not at all regardless of the weather. Believe me it snowed a lot where I went to uni! I worked for them for three years transfering between branches near my university and home town. I worked my way up from the bottom appreciating the fact I had a job, appreciating the extra responsibility and the extra pay. Just before I left to do a PhD I was offered a managerial job.

    i think the issue my daughter had was due to the change in managers/supervisors over a very short period of time..... she was never off ill/hung over/late etc...... the only time she was ill,she went into work and got sent home.

    she got treated very badly by a previous worker who got promoted to supervisor - ie the holiday front. and a new store manager - who didnt have much in the way of people skills having been moved on from back office work at headqaurters

    she didnt have a problem with cleaning/selling etc, just with the supervisor giving preference to herself and her son......

    she also did part time PR work for local newspaper and as said the new job she got she excelled at

    i think the problem was the area the shop covered was in a mostly council estate, so the expected behaviour of the young workers was assumed across the board......

    These are two generalisations. Different people will have different experiences within the same organisation. Your experiences are dependent on the type of person you are, who you work with, what shifts you work, etc etc.

    I've worked in many retailers who don't allow holiday on certain times (one stopped us from taking them from 1st Dec to 1st Jan!), I've also seen other employees come and go, not working hard enough to ever see real rewards from their job.

    Swings and roundabouts, totally dependent on the situation.

    I am a facilities manager at a UK wide company and am also a trained business advisor on a very good salary for the area I live. Our company is cutting costs at the moment because of the financial climate and so refuses to employ a cleaner.... Therefore myself and my other member of staff have to hoover, empty bins, clean toilets....

    If your daughter wants the job then she should just get on with it. I do. I have to as I would rather a job than lose my house and no job....

    However if it really is just your daughter doing all of these jobs and no one else then she should have a word with the manager. She won't (shouldn't) get away without "mucking in" completely but everyone else should do also.

    For example I am always asking my one staff member to clean the toilets, but she knows damn well I wouldn't ask her to do something that I wouldn't do.

    On a related note, a manager of a company that I advise once told me about an incident that he experienced when it snowed....

    He had a call from a member of his team saying "I can't make it in today, the snow is far too bad" the manager said to him "Ok, no problem. Are you taking it as a days holiday then?" The staff member said "Why aren't you going to pay me for it" and the manager said "No. If you're not in work and you're not ill then you don't get paid."

    20 minutes later the staff member arrived in work :D

    She has just called me and said they have just promoted a young man of 19 who has only been there 3 months to supervisor. She is very upset and I am going to encourage her to call or e-mail her manager and ask her outright what the problem is!! One of the supervisory positions she applied for was stockroom supervisor which is the job she does when not cleaning but apparently is not good enough for the job. She worked for a similar chain a couple of years ago and was supervisor for 3 months. Maybe she should contact the area manager or somebody higher up!!

    Yes it would be much faiirer to ask everybody to take a turn at cleaning but she does not. The other morning they called her anasked her to come in 2 hours early and when she got there she had to clean up a mess that had been made the previous day and had not been cleaned up as the manager was sitting in the office with 2 young male members of staff eating McDonald.!! Regarding the snow my daughter was too frightened to drive and the buses were cancelled and the shop is in a Uni town so there were plenty of staff who are at Uni and could walk in. She did not take it as holiday but did not get paid either ( but did not have an issue with that !) She suffers with her nerves and this is pulling her down but she works as she is a part time student and gets no student support. I just think that people are right and thney are trying to get rid of her.

    I am not sure that they are trying to get rid of her. I think that they have realised that she will do the jobs that others would not. Have others been asked to do cleaning etc? How long has this been going on?

    It sounds like some of them may be jealous. I think she needs to balance her short term future with the long term. If she suffers with her nerves carrying on may not be good for her. Has she considered looking elsewhere? If she feels strong enough that is a different matter. Is there anyone that would back her up if she made a complaint?

    Unfortunately as long as she keeps doing these jobs things will not change and could get worse. It is a tricky situation because there is a fine line, while in this climate everyone needs to chip in and not seem above themselves against ending up the 'dogs body'.

    Do you think that there is a possibility that they could be testing her?
