Question about my hamster...

Options
I have a female (almost certain it's a female, can't see any man bits!) syrian hamster, we've had her about 9 months.

Anyway I was just stroking her and I noticed her tail was sticking up a bit, so I stroked it and oh my god it was like she'd gone in a trance, she didn't move! I just kept stroking her back and tail and she sat like that for ages! I'd stop and she'd snap out of it and go and play like normal then i'd stroke her back and tail again, and she'd freeze! But she seemed happy, she curled her feet under and just lay on my lap. I think she would've gone to bite me if she hadn't been happy? And she isn't one for just sitting in one place, she's always running about everywhere.

Just wondered if anybody elses hamsters were like this? It's the first time she's ever acted like this, but maybe I haven't been stroking her in the right place!

I'm so scared in case i'm doing something naughty!!!

ETA - OH MY GOD!! I just googled it and she's in season!! Oh no no!! This is not good!! She's going to be expecting some loving and isn't going to be getting any!! Oh my god!!

So i'm guessing I shouldn't do this anymore? She seemed to love it!! :rotfl:

In a nutshell - she's feeling frisky! This is what they do when they are ready to "accept" a mate.

don't worry she will probably be "out of season" tomorrow (although they tend to come into season quite often they go off heat quite quickly too!)

My advice is don't sniff her! I remember when my hamsters used to go in "heat" Jesus, what a whiff! I can only describe it as musty.

It seems to be the only time you can hold your hamster in your hand for more than 10seconds, normally they are wanting to run everywhere.

they go into heat every 4 days so expect to see her do it again! I've had 3 ladyhams now, and my youngest, Faun, is the most, um, prominant - my little Pumpkin (RIP) and Clover never really did it, so I was somewhat shocked when I found my young girly being quite so blatant! Unsurprisingly, she's earned the nickname of 'horny Fauny' now! They tend to be more in heat the later in the evening it is too - most hamster breeders tend to let them do their business around midnight - looking at the time you were posting, that explains it - I normally get the girls out around 8-9ish and they're not so 'in-the-mood' then! They're not always smelly when they're in heat - so you might be lucky and not have a little stinkerbell!
