help/advice with BT

Hi, I have had an ongoing disput with BT since october, I took out line rental with them from talk talk but only because I wanted to move to tiscali, who could only take me on from a BT line. I told the guy at BT I only wanted it for this reason. However when my final bill arrived it had a £70 pound cancellation charge which I obviously challanged. BT informed me that all their contracts are 12 month rolling ones. It has been left that they will dig out the recorded conversation which I had with their guy, this was over three months ago. I haven't heard anything from Bt since. Three or four weeks ago BT wrote a final demand letter stating that they will pass it onto a collection agency which may incur additional charges to me. I rang them up to inform them what I thought the state of play was and quoted my escallation number which I'd been given last time I called. I told them I don't want any collection agency harassing me until they (BT) pull their finger out and get this recorded conversation. They reassured me that the collection agency had been told to hold off until BT has concluded their investigation.
Today I recieved a phone call from the collection agency, which I fobbed of, by saying I wasn't here and would be back at the end of the week.

What is the correct procedure here, as with credit cards in dispute, can the agency harass me whilst the debt is in dipute?
I am beginning to think BT have not got the recording of my original conversation and are just trying to scare me into payment

Dont fob off (lie) to the collection agency. Tell them the truth. The debt is disputed.

I can see your point, however if they're not supposed to contact me why have they? I only fobbed them of because they wanted some personal info which I wasn't prepared to disclose and I was surprised to hear from them

Its an automated problem which is due to someone not pressing a button somewhere.

Best tell the truth to all parties & keep a record.

yeah thanks but honesty is not always the best policy, BT have been far from honest so far!
