Washing
Just received our electric bill from southern electric £260 for 3months and we are on economy 7.
I think that using the washing machine contributes to the bill even though it is done during the economy 7 hours. I have recently decided to use the laundertte washing machine cost £2.20 larger capacity and takes 35minutes and then £1 for drying-total cost £3.20.
I would like to know if anyone has a rough estimate how much it cost to use a washing machine on economy 7.
To try and reduce our bill due to the warmer weather I have turned the heating down as the night storage heaters have to be left on all the time by the switch as well as the fridge freezer. Our place is all electric no gas.
Thanks,

If I do a 30deg wash, it costs about 4p (1/3 of a kwh or unit) and that's on full price electricity!
Even a boil wash is about 20p. Tumble drying about 20p an hour. Obviously less on Econ 7 - half that or less. It's mad using the launderette if you have a washing machine unless you live in Albert Square.
Storage heaters are a nightmare - one night of storage heating is probably months of washing machine use.0 -
Washing machine on Economy 7 should cost from 3 pence for a 40C wash to 10 pence for a 90C wash.
Tumble dryer - about 10pence.0 -
depends when you wash and how your house is wired. sometimes only the night storage heaters are wired into the lower night rate so beware! most E7 tariffs have an extremly low night rate but a higher day rate to make for it. so be carefull0

I suspect the laundertte uses electricity too or some other form of energy so
I don't see how they can be cheaper, ou also have to pay towards the cost of the machine, the premises, the staff, and for a decent profit for operator.
I expect it will cost at least twice as much?
Do you go to the launderette at night to take advantage of the econemy there?0 -
I think you will find its the storage heaters that use more electric. Ive cut my electric bill from £270 to £144 this winter. I decided to cut using my tumble drier and hang the washing by storage heater and use a dehumidifier to help dry it. I do this because the heaters do use cheap E7 electric overnite and rather than use more electric with the tumble drier, as you cant do without heating expecially this winter. This was an experiment to see if i could save money and it did work. I also only heat my water as and when i need it (which is only for 1hour a day if i have a bath instead of a shower)instead of all night or three times a .0

yes, it'll be the storage heaters - they are the worst thing ever invented. :eek:0 -
Now I have turned the night storage heaters right down as it is warmer and if we are at work and hopefully our bill will decrease. I won't be using the launderette as am now aware that the night storage heaters have contributed to the bill.
